Quick answer
Local car towing in Lancaster is the standard, non-emergency tow: moving a car, SUV or pickup that won't run to a repair shop, dealer, body shop or home in Lancaster, Quartz Hill, Rosamond or nearby. Call or send a request with the pickup address, the destination, the vehicle and whether it rolls and has keys. You can also ask to schedule the tow for later, such as when the shop opens.
What local towing covers
Local car towing in Lancaster is the everyday tow: the vehicle isn’t in traffic or in danger, it just needs to get somewhere it can be fixed or kept. Ask for one when:
- The car won’t start or isn’t safe to drive, at home, at work or in a parking lot.
- It needs to go to your mechanic, a dealer or a body shop, including for warranty work.
- You are moving a non-running car to a shop or a new address.
- It has been released from a tow yard but can’t be driven out.
- You want it moved at a set time, not right now.
If the car is on the CA-14 shoulder or in a traffic lane, see emergency towing instead.
Towing around Lancaster
Lancaster’s main north–south roads are 10th Street West, Sierra Highway and CA-14, and the lettered avenues, such as Avenue I, J and K, cross them east–west. Caltrans labels exit 40, Avenue M, through exit 45, Avenue H, as Lancaster (Caltrans exit list), and the City also counts the Avenue G interchange, exit 46, among its own.
- Distances add up. By road, central Quartz Hill is about 8 to 9 miles from Lancaster City Hall and Rosamond about 14 to 16. A tow from north Lancaster to a dealer in Palmdale, about 10 to 12 miles between city halls, is a real trip.
- Name the avenue and the numbered street. “Avenue K and 20th Street West” finds you faster than a business name. On the freeway, give the last exit, such as Avenue J or Avenue L.
- East or West matters. 10th Street West and 10th Street East are different roads, so give full street names for pickup and drop-off.
- Mailing cities can mislead. A Quartz Hill address may show Lancaster as its mailing city. Name the community too.
- Summer heat. July and August average highs at Fox Field are about 98°F (NOAA normals). For a scheduled pickup, a morning slot is easier on whoever waits with the car.
Wheel-lift or flatbed for a local tow?
| Vehicle | What usually works |
|---|---|
| Front-wheel-drive car or minivan | Wheel-lift, lifted at the front |
| Rear-wheel-drive car or pickup | Wheel-lift, lifted at the rear, or a flatbed |
| All-wheel or four-wheel drive | Flatbed, or wheel-lift with dollies |
| Electric or hybrid | Check the owner’s manual; most EVs need a flatbed |
| Lowered car, classic or motorcycle | Flatbed |
| Tight parking garage | Wheel-lift is often easier to position |
For a wheel-lift tow, AAA says to lift the drive wheels. When the vehicle or trip needs all four wheels off the ground, ask for flatbed towing.
Towing to a mechanic, dealer or body shop
Most local tows end at a repair shop. Give the shop’s name and full address when you call, and check whether it will be open when the truck arrives. Ask the shop where the car should be left and how to hand over the keys.
If the shop will be closed when the truck gets there, set it up first:
- Call the shop. Ask whether it accepts after-hours drop-offs, where to leave the car and how to leave the keys.
- Pass that on. Give the provider the shop’s name, full address and instructions, so the driver knows the car can be left there.
- Label the keys with your name, phone number and what is wrong with the car.
- Empty the car of valuables and garage remotes, and photograph all four sides before loading.
If the shop won’t take a car after hours, tow it home or schedule the tow for opening time.
Scheduled towing: booking a tow for later
On the request form, choose “Schedule later” under “When do you need help?”, or say so when you call. Give the day and a time window, both addresses, who will be there with the keys, and any gate code, garage or apartment parking rules. The provider confirms whether that time works and the price.

Call for towing help (661) 555-0123Getting a car out of a Sheriff contract yard
The City of Lancaster lists three contract yards for Sheriff tows in the Lancaster Station area. Storage is charged by the day, weekends and holidays included, so move quickly.
- The registered or legal owner gets a release at the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station lobby, 501 W. Lancaster Blvd., with valid ID.
- Take the release to the yard and pay the yard’s charges.
- If the car can’t be driven, book a tow from the yard. The City lists weekday business hours for the yards, so schedule the pickup for when the yard is open.
CHP tows are released at the CHP Antelope Valley office, 2041 W. Avenue I, on weekdays, and Palmdale has its own release process. The towed and impounded car guide covers each case.
What affects the cost
The provider sets the price. These change the total:
- Hook-up or base fee for coming out and loading the vehicle.
- Miles from pickup to drop-off, and sometimes the truck’s drive to reach you.
- Time. Nights, weekends and holidays can cost more.
- Equipment and extra work: a flatbed, dollies, wheel skates or winching.
- Waiting time, for example at a tow yard counter.
- Vehicle size. Heavy pickups and vans can need a bigger truck.
Ask for the total before you approve the tow. More detail is in how much a tow costs in Lancaster.
What to have ready when you call
- Pickup address with East or West, or the nearest cross streets.
- Destination name and full address, and whether it will be open.
- Year, make and model, and whether it is AWD, 4WD or electric.
- Whether it rolls, steers and shifts into neutral, and whether you have keys.
- When you need it: now, today or a scheduled time.
The dispatcher checklist has the full list.
Limits worth knowing
- If the vehicle is in a traffic lane or anyone is hurt, call 911 first.
- A tow moves the vehicle; it does not include diagnosis or repairs.
- Trips out of the Antelope Valley, such as to Santa Clarita or Los Angeles, are long-distance towing.
- Whether a provider can take the job at your address and time, including at night, is confirmed on the call. See how requests work on the towing in Lancaster page.
How requesting a tow works
-
Tell us where you are
Call, or send a request with your location, vehicle and what happened. A cross street, freeway exit or mile marker is enough.
-
A provider confirms
Your request goes to a local towing or roadside provider covering the Antelope Valley. They tell you whether they can reach you, the total price and an arrival estimate.
-
You decide
Nothing is sent until you agree. Wait somewhere safe, away from traffic, and pay the provider directly when the job is done.
Common questions
Can I schedule a tow for later instead of right now?
Yes, you can ask for one. On the request form, choose 'Schedule later' under 'When do you need help?' and give the day and time window, both addresses and who will be there with the keys. The provider confirms whether that time works.
Can a tow truck drop my car at a repair shop that is closed?
Only if the shop allows it. Call the shop first and ask whether it accepts after-hours drop-offs, where the car should be left and how to leave the keys. If it doesn't, tow the car home or schedule the tow for when the shop opens.
Can I ride along in the tow truck to the shop?
Sometimes. It depends on the truck's cab, the provider and its insurance, so ask when you call and have a backup ride ready.
How do I get my car from a Sheriff tow yard in Lancaster to my mechanic?
Get the release from the Lancaster Sheriff's Station first, then take the paperwork to the yard. If the car can't be driven, arrange a tow from the yard during its business hours. The impound guide on this site lists each step.
How far does a local tow go?
Usually within the Antelope Valley. Lancaster City Hall to Palmdale City Hall is about 10 to 12 miles by road, and Quartz Hill is about 8 to 9 miles. A trip out of the valley, such as to Santa Clarita or Los Angeles, is a long-distance tow.
