Need a tow in Quartz Hill?
Quartz Hill is an unincorporated community on the west side of the Antelope Valley, about 8–9 miles west-southwest of Lancaster City Hall. Some addresses here read Lancaster, CA 93536, so tell the dispatcher you are in Quartz Hill and name the nearest corner, such as 50th Street West and Avenue L. Then give the vehicle, whether it starts or rolls, and where it should go.
Where Quartz Hill is
Quartz Hill is not a city. It is an unincorporated Census-designated place in Los Angeles County, about 3.76 square miles, with 11,447 residents in the 2020 Census. County agencies serve it rather than a city government.
It sits on the west side of the valley, west-southwest of downtown Lancaster. The drive from Lancaster City Hall is about 8–9 miles, roughly 14–19 minutes without traffic, usually by heading south on 10th Street West, west on Avenue L, then onto 50th Street West. Map data shows Lancaster’s city limits wrapping around its north, east and west sides, with Palmdale to the south.
That mix of jurisdictions is why the address matters. The Quartz Hill Library gives its address as “Quartz Hill, CA 93536,” yet the county’s own facility locator lists it under “Lancaster,” and other addresses here may read Lancaster too. A dispatcher who hears only “Lancaster, 93536” may picture the wrong part of the valley, so say “Quartz Hill” and give the corner.
Main roads in and around Quartz Hill
- 50th Street West is the north–south spine. Quartz Hill Elementary is on it.
- Avenue L runs east–west past Quartz Hill High School and on toward Lancaster, where it has its own CA-14 interchange (exit 41).
- Avenue M-2 is home to the Quartz Hill Library at 5040 W. Avenue M-2, a handy landmark if you are unsure of an address.
- Avenue M (CA-14 exit 40) and 60th Street West are other nearby cross streets.
- 10th Street West is the main route back toward central Lancaster and south toward Palmdale’s shopping district.
The valley’s grid helps here: lettered avenues run east–west and numbered streets run north–south. “Avenue L and 50th Street West” pins a location faster than a house number alone.
Common reasons drivers need a tow in Quartz Hill
Many of these start close to home, in a driveway, a school lot or a side street:
- The car won’t start in the morning. NOAA’s normals for Lancaster’s Fox Field and Palmdale Airport both show about 36 days a year at or above 100°F, plus roughly 54 to 68 nights at or below freezing. Heat does the damage; a cold start is often when it shows. Read why desert heat kills car batteries.
- Keys locked inside during a school pickup on Avenue L or 50th Street West, or at a corner store.
- A flat on a side street. If you have a usable spare and a jack, a roadside call can be enough; if the wheel or tire is damaged, plan on a tow.
- A short tow to a shop in Lancaster or Palmdale. Moving a car from a Quartz Hill driveway to a mechanic or dealer in either city is a short local trip.
- Spring wind. Quartz Hill is in the National Weather Service’s Antelope Valley forecast zone, where wind advisories cluster in February through May. A trailer or high-profile vehicle may be unsafe to keep driving.

Call for towing help (661) 555-0123Who to call besides a tow truck
Quartz Hill sits outside any city, which changes who handles some calls compared with Lancaster city streets:
- 911 for injuries, a fire or a vehicle blocking traffic.
- Law enforcement: LASD Lancaster Station, 501 W. Lancaster Blvd., (661) 948-8466. It lists Quartz Hill among the areas it serves; Palmdale’s station does not, even though Palmdale is next door.
- Traffic collisions on county roads: CHP Antelope Valley Area, (661) 743-6060. CHP patrols about 1,400 miles of unincorporated roads in the valley. If you hit a parked car and leave a note, Vehicle Code 20002 says to notify the local CHP office in an unincorporated area.
- Road hazards such as a deep pothole or debris: LA County Public Works, 1-800-675-4357, with closures posted at pw.lacounty.gov/roadclosures.
If your car was towed, ask the agency that ordered it which yard has it. The City of Lancaster’s $80 release fee covers vehicles towed inside Lancaster city limits, which Quartz Hill is not. LASD sets its own administrative release fee for vehicles stored from unincorporated areas; call the Lancaster Station for the current amount and documents. The full process is in getting a towed car back in the Antelope Valley.

Common questions
Is Quartz Hill part of Lancaster?
No. Quartz Hill is an unincorporated Census-designated place in LA County, though some mailing addresses use Lancaster 93536. The LASD Lancaster Station covers it, and CHP handles traffic collisions on its county roads.
Who do I call after a fender-bender on a Quartz Hill street?
Call 911 if anyone is hurt or the cars are blocking traffic. Collisions on unincorporated county roads, including those in Quartz Hill, are normally reported to the CHP Antelope Valley Area, (661) 743-6060, not the Sheriff.
My car won't start in my driveway in Quartz Hill. Do I need a tow?
Often not. If the engine clicks or cranks slowly, a jump start may get you to a battery shop. If it still won't start, or the battery is swollen or leaking, ask for a tow instead.
Does Lancaster's $80 release fee apply to a car towed in Quartz Hill?
The City of Lancaster's $80 fee is for vehicles towed inside city limits, and Quartz Hill is outside them. LASD sets its own administrative release fee for unincorporated areas, so ask the Lancaster Station for the current amount.
