Quick answer
After a crash in Lancaster, call 911 if anyone is hurt or a car is blocking traffic. CHP handles collisions on CA-14 and unincorporated roads; the Sheriff's Lancaster Station handles city streets. When CHP handles the scene, you can ask for the tow company you want. A tow company you call directly must give you an itemized written estimate to sign before hook-up. File a DMV SR-1 within 10 days if anyone was hurt or damage is over $1,000.
What accident recovery covers
Accident recovery is towing a vehicle after a collision, plus the extra work a damaged car can need:
- Loading a car that won’t roll or steer, using the winch and wheel dollies.
- Moving a car with a wheel pushed in, a broken axle or a flat that can’t be changed.
- Pulling a car out of a ditch, off an embankment or back from a desert lot. See winch-out service.
- Taking it to a body shop, your home or the shop your insurer picks.
Crash damage is a standard reason to ask for a flatbed: it carries the car with all four wheels off the road, so a bent wheel or broken suspension part isn’t dragged along the pavement.
Right after a crash: who to call
If anyone is hurt, call 911
Also call 911 if a vehicle is blocking traffic, or there is fire or leaking fuel. Medical help and a safe scene come before any tow.
- On CA-14, including inside Lancaster city limits: CHP investigates. It has primary jurisdiction on freeways (Vehicle Code 2400). CHP Antelope Valley Area office: (661) 743-6060.
- On SR-138 (Avenue D, Pearblossom Highway) and other unincorporated roads: CHP Antelope Valley Area.
- On Lancaster city streets: the LA County Sheriff’s Lancaster Station, (661) 948-8466, which polices the city under contract.
- In Rosamond, on the Kern County side: CHP Mojave Area office, (661) 823-5500.
If no one is hurt and the cars can move, the DMV says to get out of traffic first, then call.
Your duties after a collision, in plain terms
This is a short summary of the Vehicle Code, not legal advice.
- Stop. In an injury crash, stop at the scene (VC 20001). Give your name, address, plate and the owner’s details to the other driver and any officer, show your license if asked, and help anyone injured, including arranging a ride to care (VC 20003).
- Property damage only: stop at the nearest place that doesn’t block traffic. Moving there doesn’t affect who is at fault. Exchange license, registration and address details. If you hit an unattended car or property, leave a note with your name and address and report it to the police (in Lancaster, the Sheriff) or, outside city limits, to CHP (VC 20002).
- A death with no officer present: report it to CHP or the police without delay (VC 20004).
- An injury or death crash: make a written report to CHP or the city police no later than 24 hours after the crash (VC 20008).
- DMV SR-1: file within 10 days if anyone was injured or killed, or property damage was over $1,000. Each driver files, regardless of fault, and police will not file it for you.
The step-by-step version is in what to do after a car accident in Lancaster.
Your rights when the car is towed
| Your right | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Ask for a specific tow company or motor club when CHP handles the scene | CHP Highway Patrol Manual 81.2 |
| Turn away a tow truck nobody called | Vehicle Code 22513 |
| A signed, itemized written estimate before hook-up | Vehicle Code 22513 |
| No charges beyond the estimate without your consent | Vehicle Code 22513 |
| Reasonable fees on accident tows | Vehicle Code 22524.5 |
| An itemized invoice before you pay | Vehicle Code 22651.07 |
The estimate. If you called the tow company and you are present, it must give you a written estimate before attaching your car. It lists the company’s name, address, phone and motor carrier permit number, the tow truck’s plate, the operator’s name, and a cost for each service: labor, special equipment, mileage from dispatch to return, and storage as a 24-hour rate. You sign it and get a copy. Motor-club calls and law-enforcement contract tows are exempt.
Fees presumed unreasonable after an accident, unless set in a law-enforcement agreement (VC 22524.5):
- administrative or filing fees, apart from DMV and lien-sale paperwork
- security, dolly, load and unload, and pull-out fees
- gate fees, unless you or your insurer ask for a release outside business hours
- an after-hours surcharge above 10% of the normal towing rate
- holiday storage above the posted daily rate
- storage above half the daily rate when the car is picked up within the first four hours
Getting your things out. Before you pay, you may collect personal property at no charge during business hours (Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except state holidays), take the car back within the first 72 hours without a lien fee, inspect it, and pay by cash, insurer’s check or a valid bank credit card (VC 22651.07). If an officer had the car stored or impounded, see getting a towed or impounded car back.
Need a damaged car moved in Lancaster?
Call for towing help (661) 555-0123What affects the cost
- The size and class of the vehicle.
- Time on scene: winching a car back to the road, dollies under a locked wheel, or a second truck.
- Miles to the body shop, your home or the yard.
- Time of day, and storage days if the car waits for an adjuster.
Your insurer may cover reasonable towing and storage, so call before you choose a destination. See how much a tow costs in Lancaster.
What to have ready when you call
- The exact location, and whether CHP or the Sheriff is on scene. Note any report or incident number.
- Year, make and model, and the damage: does it roll and steer, is anything leaking?
- Where it should go, plus your insurance claim number if you have one.
- How many people need a ride.
How requesting a tow works
-
Tell us where you are
Call, or send a request with your location, vehicle and what happened. A cross street, freeway exit or mile marker is enough.
-
A provider confirms
Your request goes to a local towing or roadside provider covering the Antelope Valley. They tell you whether they can reach you, the total price and an arrival estimate.
-
You decide
Nothing is sent until you agree. Wait somewhere safe, away from traffic, and pay the provider directly when the job is done.
Common questions
Can I choose my own tow company after a crash in Lancaster?
Usually. When CHP handles the scene, its policy is to honor your request for a specific tow company or motor club unless that is impractical, such as a car blocking a freeway off-ramp, or the law requires the vehicle to be stored or impounded.
Do I need to file an SR-1 with the DMV after a crash?
Yes, within 10 days, if anyone was injured (however slightly) or killed, or if property damage was over $1,000. Each driver files, whoever was at fault, and it is separate from any police or insurance report.
Can I get my things out of my car at the tow yard before I pay?
Yes. California law gives you the right to collect your personal property at no charge during normal business hours, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except state holidays, before you pay towing or storage fees.
Will my insurance pay for the tow after an accident?
It may, if your policy covers towing and storage for the loss. Under Vehicle Code 22524.5, an insurer responsible for reasonable towing and storage charges after an accident is liable for them to the tower. Call your insurer before you choose a destination.
What should a tow company give me before it hooks up my car at a crash?
If you called it and you are there, a written itemized estimate with the company's name, address, phone and motor carrier permit number, the truck's plate, the operator's name and the cost of each service. You sign it and keep a copy. Motor-club and law-enforcement contract tows are exempt.
